George 'Goen' Huggins

1st GENERATION 

 

 

01.  GEORGE HUGGINS 1 aka GOEN HUGGINS was born between 1812-1815 in Greene County, Pennsylvania1  and died in 1856 in Wetzel County, (West) Virginia.1   He was probably the son of JOHN HUGGINS and brother of JOHN RANDOLPH HUGGANS

 

Depending upon the document, George was named Goring, Going, Goin, Goen, Garner or Goyen.2  He was a farmer and lived in Wetzel County3  which was created from Tyler County in 1846.

 

    In about 1835, George married BARBARA YOHO in Tyler (now Wetzel) County.1,4   The daughter of GEORGE WASHINGTON YOHO and JANE HARTLEY,1,5 she was born in about 1814 at Paugh Ridge, Tyler County 5 or about 1818 in Ohio County.7  Barbara died 10 November 1908 in New Dale, Wetzel County.8

     1840 Census:9

"Garner" & Barbara lived in Tyler (now Wetzel) County with one male child under 5 years of age (Henry) and one female child under 5 (Barbara Jane).

 

    1850 Census (taken on 13 September):10

Going” (age 35) and Barbara (35) lived on a farm in the 64th District in Wetzel County.  They could not read or write.  Also living there were their children Henry (age 14), Jane (12), Elizabeth (8), Harrison (7), Rachel (4) and “Athy” (2).  Henry & Jane attended school. 

        Note:  Ancestry.com incorrectly showed George’s first name as Gong whereas the actual census listed him as Going.

 

Neighbors:

Included the families of Harrison Yoho* (36), John Goddard** (36), John K. Nicely*** (31), Catherine Johnson (50) and Samuel “Furby”**** (34).

 

* Harrison Yoho was the brother of George’s wife, Barbara Yoho Huggins .

** John William Goddard was married to Barbara Yoho Huggins’ sister, Amanda Elizabeth Yoho.

*** John K. Nicely was married to Elizabeth Goddard (sister of John William Goddard).

****Samuel Furbee’s son, Thomas, married George’s daughter, Elizabeth

 

     In about 1856, George "Goen" Huggins died.

 

     On 21 January 1858, Barbara married (2) STEPHEN MONTGOMERY in Wetzel County.7  Stephen was born about 1819* in Greene County, Pennsylvania8 and died 4 December 1896 in New Dale, Wetzel County.8  His parents were ANDREW MONTGOMERY & MARGARET McDONALD.1

    Stephen had been previously married to BARBARA GATTS from 18 February 184111  until her death on 18 April 1857.11  She was the daughter of NICHOLAS GATTS & REBECCA YOHO12 and was a first cousin to George “Goen” Huggins’ wife, Barbara YohoStephen & 1st wife Barbara Gatts had at least five children –  Margaret (born 1841),13  Ursula (born 1843),13  Samuel (born 1845),13 Stephen Hugh (born 21 May 1846 & died 22 January 1923)13 and George W. (born about 1853).13

 

  During the 1860 census14, Barbara Montgomery (age 44) & 2nd husband Stephen Montgomery (42) lived in the Lynn Camp area in Marshall County with her children Jane (age 21), Harrison (17), Rachel (14), “Athe” (12) & George (7), Stephen's son George Montgomery (17) plus Stephen H. Brady (14; unknown relationship) and day laborer Alexander Burton (20).  Barbara's children were all listed under their step-father’s surname, MontgomeryStephen was a cooper and had personal property valued at $125.  Barbara and daughter Jane could not read or write.  Harrison was employed as a farm laborer.


  During the 1870 census
15Stephen Montgomery (age 52) & wife Barbara (55) lived in Proctor District, Wetzel County with his son, George L. Montgomery (17). Stephen worked as a cooper.  Barbara and George could not read or write.


  During the 1880 census16, Stephen Montgomery (age 62) & wife Barbara (66) lived in Proctor District, Wetzel County with farm laborer John McDonal (49). Stephen was a farmer.  Barbara could not read or write.


I can't locate Barbara on the 1900 census; Stephen had died in 1896.

                       i.     HENRY HUGGINS was born in 1836 in Tyler/Wetzel County in about 1836.1  Further details are unknown.

 

2.                   ii.     BARBARA JANE HUGGINS was born in 1838 in Tyler/Wetzel County  and died 3 May 1922 in Wetzel County.    

                             

3.                   iii.     ELIZABETH ‘JANE’ HUGGINS was born 28 March 1841 in Tyler/Wetzel County and died 12 February 1924 in Wetzel County

 

4.                  iv.     HARRISON WILLIAM HUGGINS was born 04 February 1843 in Tyler/Wetzel County and died 13 December 1933 in Wheeling.

 

5.                   v.     RACHEL HUGGINS was born 08 August 1844 in Tyler County  and died 16 July 1929 in Ravenna.

 

6.                  vi.     ATHA HUGGINS was born 18 May 1848*  and died 31 December 1938 in Proctor District..

 

7.                  vii.     GEORGE THOMAS HUGGINS aka TOMMY HUGGINS was born in May 1851 in Wileyville  and died on 23 September 1944 in Wheeling
