Patricia Pettit Parsons, great-granddaughter of Clarence and Mary, sent this note about them (thank you, Pat!):

{Great} Grandpap {Clarence Oscar} Huggins was maybe 5'10" and very slim. I never saw him in anything but black suit pants and a white shirt with a black fedora.

He was an itinerate lay speaker for churches all over the Ohio Valley and made a very poor living from what I've been told.

{Great} Grandma {Mary Rachel Davis} Huggins was short, maybe 5' or so and very round - they were sort of the image of Jack Spratt and his wife.  She had a very round face and apple cheeks with sparkly eyes.  Her hair was very long and white and she wore it in a bun. I don't think I ever saw her without an apron.

They both died eventually of strokes.  {Clarence} had one year before he died and the only residual effect he had was a crippled right arm and spastic-like hand.  {Mary} died when she was 92 {s/b 102}.  She died of arteriosclerosis but had previously had several very small strokes without residual effects.   She remembered me up until the last couple days of her life.

Hugh Sapp, who had been moving hay and stopped just long enough to perform the ceremony.9  The son of FRANCIS LEMASTERS and LYDIA POSTLETHWAIT, John was born 16 February 1893 in Wileyville44 and died 17 July 1975 in New Martinsville.44   He was buried at Northview Cemetery (on East side of highway) in New Martinsville.33   During his life, John was employed at PPG, Hope Natural Gas Company and was also a carpenter.48

Per the Helmick Family Tree website at Ancestry.com (Reprinted with permission):

John was the son of Francis Marion and Lydia Lemasters "Postlethwait." There were 10 children in his family. Issac, Ellis, Joe, William, Pete, Walter, Thomas, Jess and Annie.

John and Pearl Matzie Huggins were married on Feb. 16th 1916 out in a hay field by Reverend Hugh Sapp. He had been mowing hay at the time and stopped to marry them. Members present at the wedding were Mrs. Sapp and Charlie Richter.

John and Pearl resided at 501 Kapple Street in New Martinsville most of their lives.  They moved out to a home John built 14 miles from New Martinsville near Wileyville and lived there until John's death in the Marshall County, Reynolds Memorial Hospital July 17th, 1975. Pearl remained in the house John built until suffering a stroke and moved back into New Martinsville.

Also from the same site:

Pearl lived all her life in the New Martinsville area. She and her husband John R. later moved to the country in Wileyville. John built a small home with enough land for a garden. He and Pearl had a good life there.

Harold Lee Huggins stayed with them. He had some problems with his legs and had this three wheeler bicycle he rode up & down Rt. 7 to Homer Huggins, their neighbor.

John fell sick and died in the Glendale Memorial Hospital the day before he was supposed to be released, July 17th 1975. This came as a shock to everyone.

Pearl stayed on at the home in Wileyville. At this time she was taking care of a foster child, Dorothy Sloan. This helped her to get over the loneliness of loosing John. She had a car and drove into town, New Martinsville, quite often.  She liked to talk politics with any one willing to hear her view on the present issues.

Pearl had a stroke leaving her unable to drive or talk. She was moved into town to be taken care of by her daughter Mildred and grand-daughter Karen. They took turns trying to nurse Pearl back to health. Just as she would show signs of progress, like being able to walk with a walker, or being able to say yes & no or most famous" remarkable", she had a series of mini strokes that finally led to her death February 16th 1992.  This was the same day she and John were married in 1916

Notes from son Donnie Huggins {printed with permission}:

Pop {Harry Melvin Huggins} was the 8th of 9 kids and I am the 6th of his second marriage which produced 2 and an earlier girlfriend which produced 1. I am ninth in his line at least.

Pop only weighed 120 lbs at age 18. At about 35 years he weighed about 155 and was very strong and liked to show you. He never drank and was not a brawler but he would pick up heavy stuff and do some wrestling.

I can only remember him as older and big. He always talked very loud and his voice carried very well. People on surrounding ridges said they could understand his side of a conversation. As he got older he got hard of hearing and he got louder and louder. If he got excited he would hurt your ears.

Notes by OLIVE LULU POSTLETHWAIT HUGGINS PRUITT dated February. 2001   Regarding her school years from 1920-1926 {sent to me by her son, Donnie Huggins – printed with permission}:

All the schools in our area were rural.  There were no school buses; and teachers rode horses to school.  We walked two miles each way. Extracurricular activities were milking the cow before and after school ---- ha ha.

We didn't wear uniforms to school, just street clothes. Our clothes were all home-made.  The girls wore dresses ONLY; boys wore pants with buttons (no zippers yet).  No Velcro, either!!!   We didn't take any field trips.  We didn't have assemblies like the schools do today.

I went to the 6th grade myself.  There were 8 grades in the school, and one teacher taught all 8 grades.  We had no kindergarten.  The teacher always stood up front of the class.

We had no paper, no lap boards, we went to the chalkboard to write. When we DID write on paper (which was rare) we dipped ink from a bottle. Pencils were called "penny pencils".  Crayons only cost a nickel (4 or 5 crayons to a box), but "who had  a nickel!"   Tablets were about 5 inches wide.

We took cornbread and milk for lunch; but when the cow went dry in winter we had to go to Grandma Liston's to get milk from her.

We had spelling, reading, arithmetic, and geography.

We carried water in from the spring for the school.  Older boys who lived close to school would go early and get the fires started in the winter so it would be warm when the others got there.

My teacher all the way through school was Mr. Jim Dulaney except for one year we had a woman, Lucy Sidell.  There was no principal, counselor, janitor, cafeteria workers, etc; only the teacher.  The older kids cleaned the school.

School hours were 9:00 to 4:00.  We didn't have any electricity, or running water, or indoor bathrooms.  Lots of large windows provided our light.

All the kids in our school were white, Protestant.

I remember Grandpa Liston heating a rock by the fireplace all night and putting it in the sled or wagon by my feet and covered with quilts to keep us warm on the all-day trip to New Martinsville.

There were no cars; we rode horses to go anywhere or we walked.

Presidents at that time were Harding and Coolidge.
