ETHEL MAE HUGGINS (CLARENCE OSCAR⁴, WILLIAM THOMAS³, HARRISON WILLIAM², GEORGE¹) was born 07 January 1907 in Pine Grove, Wetzel County¹ and died 01 April 1993 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, Marshall County.⁶¹ She was buried at Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville, Wetzel County. The son of HENRY JACKSON GOODNIGHT & MARY ELLEN NOLAN, he was born 29 December 1904 in Reader and died from emphysema⁶²on 09 July 1971⁷² at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale. At the time of their marriage, they lived in Wetzel County - George in Reader and Ethel in Pine Grove.⁶

i. HARLEY WILLARD GOODNIGHT was born 24 December 1925 in Moundsville⁶and drowned on 28 February 1966 in New Martinsville when he fell from a barge.⁶²

During the 1930 census, he lived with his parents.

On 14 March 1944⁷¹, Harley enlisted in the Army at Fort Thomas, Campbell County, Kentucky. He was single with no dependents, lived in Marshall County and had worked as an attendant in the "filling station and parking lot" industry.

On 21 May 1949, Harley married (2) PAULINE JANE THARP in Moundsville. (Click here to view Marriage license/Minister's return). The daughter of BENJAMIN THARP & REBECCA VIRGINIA SHEPHERD,⁷⁰ she was born 13 August 1920 in Wetzel County and died 12 August 2009 in Baltimore, Maryland.^4,73

Harley and (2) Pauline had 3 children - VIRGINIA MAE GOODNIGHT, GEORGE GOODNIGHT and VICKIE GOODNIGHT.⁷³

Virginia Mae Goodnight married WILBUR RAY BARTH, son of WILBERT BARTH and ANN SCHOONOVER.^6,73 Wilbur was born 22 May 1946 in New Martinsville⁶ and died 20 September 1996.⁷³ Wilbur and Virginia had three children, WILLIAM EDWARD BARTH, REBECCA JANE BARTH and MICHAEL RAY BARTH.⁷³

ii. GEORGE JUNIOR GOODNIGHTwas born 10 June 1929 in Moundsville⁶¹and died from cancer⁶² on 04 March 1968 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale, Marshall County.⁷³

George married (1) & (2) DARLENE SARLEO, the daughter of ROBERT SARLEO & ILA ___. ⁶ She was born in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas.⁶ This was a 2nd marriage for both - they had previously been divorced.⁷⁰ George and Darlene’s 2nd marriage also ended in divorce.⁶They had 3 children - JACQUELINE GOODNIGHT, GERALD GOODNIGHT and JONI GOODNIGHT.⁷⁰

George married (3) CLARA BELLE DARRAH in Moundsville.⁶ The daughter of HARLEY DARRAH & EVA THEISS, Clara was born in Cameron.⁶ She had previously been married to ___ GOUDY⁶ and had been divorced.⁶ They had one child - HAZEL MAE GOODNIGHT ⁶¹married ___ LOPEZ.⁷³

iii. PHYLLIS CAILEEN GOODNIGHT who married WILLIAM HARTLEY aka BILL HARTLEY.^6,62 They had 5 children - KATHY GOODNIGHT, WILLIAM GOODNIGHT, GEORGE HOUSTON GOODNIGHT, RANDY GOODNIGHT ⁷⁰and WILLARD JEFFERSON GOODNIGHT.²⁸

He married BRENDA JOYCE OLIVER in Moundsville.⁶ The daughter of EDWARD OLIVER & HELEN DERROW, she was born in Glen Dale.⁶They had two children - JULIE DIANNA GOODNIGHT⁶² and MICHAEL MARVIN GOODNIGHT.⁷⁰

66. SOPHIA VIRGINIA HUGGINS (CLARENCE OSCAR⁴, WILLIAM THOMAS³, HARRISON WILLIAM², GEORGE¹) was born 11 April 1912 in New Martinsville¹and died 30 March 2004 in Moundsville.⁵⁹She was buried at Wood Hill Cemetery in Moundsville. (Click here to view Obituary and here to view Funeral Card).

On 22 February 1930, Sophia married WILLIAM ARTHUR WHEELER (known as Arthur) in Moundsville.⁶ (Click here to view Marriage License/Minister's Return). The son of EMMET WHEELER & NARCISSA LOY⁶¹, he was born 19 September 1911 in Fork Ridge, Marshall County⁶ and died 28 May 1969 at Ohio Valley Hospital in Wheeling.¹He was buried at Wood Hill Church Cemetery, Rte 250, Moundsville.¹(Click here to view obituary).

1930 Census (taken on 12 April):

Arthur "Wheeles" (age 18) & wife Sophia (18) lived in a mining housing rented home ($10 per month) at Highland Avenue, Washington District, Marshall County with two lodgers, Seville Dimlas (age 18) & Richard Johnson. Arthur was employed as a dipper at a Stamping Works and the two lodgers were coal miners. None of the men had served in the military.

Neighbors:

Included families of Arlan Parks (age 29), Ray Komorowski (40), Stella Gurskey (51), John W. Cunningham (40), Tony Polinsky (37), Nicholas Purks (42), Ike Farley (42) and John Willis (27). All of these men were coal miners; two had wives who worked at the Stamping Works. The last four families lived in mining housing at Parrs Run.

During WW II, Arthur was scheduled to serve in the Navy but the smelter where he was employed appealed as he was needed there for the war effort. The Navy agreed and Arthur remained in West Virginia.⁶³

In 1987, Sophia lived on Rt 1 in Glen Easton.¹

On 03 April 2009, maternal granddaughter Pat Petit Parsons wrote some of her memories of her grandfather and great-grandparents:

{William} Arthur Wheeler was my grandfather [my mother's father]. He died when I was 17 so I remember him very well.

When I was a kid, he worked for the Marx Toy Factory in Glendale, WV from his mid- thirties until he died. He was very ill with heart problems that could not be treated at that time and had a tendency for weakness and passing out.

His father's name was Emitt and mother was Narcicus - here the story changes according to who you talk to. My mother always told me Narcicus was full blooded Cherokee Indian and had been found in lower WV with her younger brother. There is no record of either one of them but they were apparently taken in by a family by the name of Loy and adopted.

When Narcicus died, she was buried outside a graveyard near Washington, PA because she was Indian. It was felt at that time that she was a "savage" so couldn't be buried in hallowed ground. A farmer donated the site. My father knows where it is and has been there but is in ill health himself.

She apparently died in her early thirties from complications of childbirth and diabetes. Arthur was around three years old when she died.

i. WANETA DELORES WHEELER was born 27 October 1930 in Moundsville¹ and died from complications of diabetes⁶⁴ on 20 November 1981¹ at Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale.⁶¹

On 2 December 1949, she married HAROLD ELWOOD SIBURT in Moundsville.⁶ (Click here to view Marriage License/Minister’s Return). The son of WILLIAM SIBURT aka CLARENCE SIBURT & STELLA MAE MULDREW, he was born 1 July 1928 in Moundsville⁶and died in May 1978.⁴

Waneta filed for divorce in 1966.

They had at least 3 children - LINDA SIBURT, ROBERT SIBURT and JUDY SIBURT.

ii. JEAN ELIZABETH WHEELER was born 18 September 1932 in Moundsville ^4,6 and died from complications of diabetes and Alzheimer's disease⁶⁴ on 7 August 2007 at Mound View Health Care Center in Moundsville.¹¹(Click here for obituary).

She married HAROLD ALLEN PETTIT ⁶¹ in Moundsville.⁶ The son of LAWRENCE PETTIT & EVA C. BRIGGS⁶¹, he was born in Moundsville.⁶

They had at least 5 children - RONALD PETTIT, PATRICIA PETTIT, twins DEAN PETTIT & GENE PETTIT and SANDRA PETTIT.

iii. RAYMOND ARTHUR WHEELER aka RAY WHEELER was born 26 April 1935 in Moundsville⁷ and died in a logging accident⁶⁴ on 4 October 1974 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.⁶¹

He married GERALDINE MARY WARSINSKEY aka GERRY WARSINSKEY in Moundsville. ⁶The daughter of LEO FREDERICK WARSINSKEY & MARY ____, she was born in Ohio County.⁶ They had at least 2 children - FREDERICK "FRED" WHEELER and MARY "ELAINE" WHEELER.

iv. TWILLA RACHEL WHEELER was born in Moundsville.⁶

She married (1) PAUL ALLEN GILMORE in Moundsville.⁶ The son of ERNEST WALTER GILMORE & MAUNIE SIMMS aka IMOGENE SIMMS ⁶¹ , he was born in Moundsville.⁶They had two children - MARK GILMORE and SHARI GILMORE.

Twilla married (2) ROBERT RASMUSSEN, the son of ROBERT RASMUSSEN and NADINE TOURTELOT. ⁶⁵

v. ROGER ROSS WHEELER was born in Moundsville.⁷

He married (1) LAVERNE JELANICK⁷ and they had 1 child, GARY WHEELER.⁶¹

She married RONALD LEE DeNOON in Moundsville.⁶The son of ALVIN O. DeNOON & CLARA EBBERT, he was born in Moundsville.⁶They had at least 3 children before divorcing - TERESA DeNOON, RONA DeNOON and ALICE DeNOON.

vii. ZANA WHEELER was born - and died several hours later - on 11 May 1943 in Moundsville.⁶⁰

67. CLYDE EARL HUGGINS (CLARENCE OSCAR⁴, WILLIAM THOMAS³, HARRISON WILLIAM², GEORGE¹) was born 22 February 1917 in Pine Grove⁸ and died due to injuries from an auto accident on 13 June 1992 in Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio.² (Click here for obituary).

In 1940, he married (1) EILEEN MARY BIGLIN in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.⁸ The marriage ended in divorce.⁸

On 20 April 1943, Clyde enlisted as a Private in the Army in Columbus, Ohio.⁹His occupation was “Gas and Oil Man” and he had had a grammar school education.

On 16 April 1981, he married (2) DONNA BELL MOREHEAD in Galion, Crawford County, Ohio.⁸ The daughter of LLOYD MOREHEAD & RUTH ____, she was born 14 February 1923⁴ in Tiro, Crawford County, Ohio⁸ and died 27 March 1988 in Galion, Crawford County.¹⁹Donna had previously been married to RICHARD BONNEN.⁸

In 1987, Clyde lived at 5296 County Road 57 in Galion, Ohio.⁸

During his lifetime, he was employed as a coal miner & watchman for the Standard Grand & Gravel Company and worked for the Magma Copper Company in Superior, Arizona.¹¹

70. JANET ELOWISE HUGGINS (CLARENCE OSCAR⁴, WILLIAM THOMAS³, HARRISON WILLIAM², GEORGE¹) was born in Wileyville.¹³

She married RAYMOND LESTER RICHMOND in Moundsville.⁶ The son of ARCHIE RICHMOND & AUSTIE GORBY, he was born 11 May 1924 in Cambridge, Ohio¹³ and died 6 November 2005 (possibly in Moundsville).⁴

Raymond served in the military during WWII from 1943-1946. ¹³ After the war, he was employed as a Welder and was employed for at least 21 years at the Louis Marx toy factory in Moundsville.¹³

COY BERNARD HUGGINS (CLARENCE OSCAR⁴, WILLIAM THOMAS³, HARRISON WILLIAM², GEORGE¹) was born 20 December 1932 in Pioneer, Marshall County ⁶ and died 6 August 1994 in Tucson, Arizona² (or 7 August 1994).⁴He was buried at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, Section 18d Site 2376, 23029 North Cave Creed Road, Phoenix, Arizona.⁶⁹

On 28 January 1958, Coy married (1) EULAH VIRGINIA WOOD in Moundsville, Marshall County. (Click here to view Marriage license/Minister's return). The daughter of MERLE WOOD & OPAL ___, she was born in Marshall County.

At the time of their marriage, Coy and Eulah lived in Moundsville.⁶

On 08 January 1951, Coy entered the military and served as IC2 in the Navy during the Korean Conflict.⁶⁹

On 29 April 1979, Coy married (2) DIANA GWENDOLINE JACKSON in Clark County, Nevada.⁶⁸

By 1987, Coy was the manager of Stonewall Jackson Insurance Company and had worked in the copper mines.¹⁴

(The Social Security Death Index shows a Kenneth Smith born that date who died September 1975 – unknown if this is the same person).

They had at least 4 children - DEBRA SMITH, BRUCE SMITH, CHERYL SMITH and CONNIE SMITH.

ii. DARLA JEAN WEEKLEY was born in Lore City, Guernsey County.¹⁸

She married JOHN R. FITZGERALD.¹⁸The son of PEARLE FITZGERALD & IRENE HARDING, he was born 25 May 1938¹⁸ and he died 30 July 2007 (possibly in Guernsey County).⁴

She married (2) DENNIS HAUGHN¹⁸and had at least one child, JERROD HAUGHN.

73. RALPH EDWARD HUGGINS (WILEY HARRISON⁴, WILLIAM THOMAS³, HARRISON WILLIAM², GEORGE¹) was born 3 August 1917 in Pine Grove¹⁸ and died 13 October 1994 in Magnolia, Stark County,Ohio.⁴

On 15 October 1940, Ralph enlisted in the National Guard as Private 1^st class in the Field Artillery branch.¹⁸ (He signed up the same day as brother. Wilbur). He was shown as having completed high school, had been employed as an automobile serviceman and was single without dependents. He was 6’6” tall and 138 pounds – although these numbers may be incorrect.

On 01 March 1947, Ralph married DOROTHY IRENE WATSON in Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio.¹⁸ The daughter of HERBERT WATSON and MARY SMITH, she was born in Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio.¹⁸

According to son Gregory Ralph Huggins:

My Dad was 5'6" tall and 135 lbs. He worked for the Ford Motor Company in Canton, Ohio for about 40 (?) years. He was a tool and die bench finisher. I really do not know what the job was, but he would come home with metal on his clothes that had melted on him.

On 15 February 1941, she married CLARENCE LEONARD WATSON .¹⁹ He was born 18 October 1912 in Guernsey County, Ohio ¹⁹ and died in July 1986 (possibly in Cambridge, Ohio).⁴ At the time of his death, Clarence was a retired carpenter.¹⁹

He married (2) DARLENE KAY STOTTSBERRY.¹⁹ The daughter of CECIL STOTTSBERRY & VERNA ____, she was born in Caldwell, Noble County, Ohio.¹⁹They had at least 3 children - BRIAN WATSON, STEPHANIE WATSON and LARRY WATSON.
