02. OLIVER T. HUGGANS (JOHN RANDOLPH¹) was born 26 April 1854 at Proctor Run, Wetzel County⁸⁰ and died there on 27 August 1883.¹ He was buried at Antioch Cemetery in Wetzel County. (See below).

On 06 May 1878, Oliver married MARY ELLEN GARNER⁷ in Wetzel County. (Click here to view Marriage license/Minister's return). The daughter of HENRY GARNER and ELEANOR KECK, she was born on 22 August 1848 in Wetzel County⁸ and died there on 13 August 1883.⁹

Page 376 of Charles Huggins' book, Huggins Families of Western PA & Northern West Virginia, (published in 1987), showed Oliver as being married twice - (1) on 6 May 1878 in Wetzel County to May E. Parsons who was born about 1853 in (West) Virginia and (2) on an unknown date to Mary E. Gardner who was born about 1851 in (West) Virginia and died on 13 Aug 1883.

"May E. Parsons" and "Mary E. Gardner" were actually the same person - Mary Ellen Garner. Her first marriage (on 4 May 1867) was to Henry Seth Parsons, who died on 27 June 1877. Therefore, at the time Mary married Oliver Huggans in 1878, her legal name was Mary Ellen Parsons.

Mary Ellen Garner Parsons Huggans had six children by Henry Seth Parsons, five of which survived childhood:²

JAMES LEONARD PARSONS: ² Born 13 December 1866 in Wetzel County and died 15 August 1935 in Moundsville.³ He married MARGARET E. RINE and they had six children, five of which survived childhood.^{10, 78}(Click here to view Marriage License)
JOSEPH GARNER PARSONS:² Born 24 November 1868 in Wetzel County and died 14 March 1943 in Proctor.³ (Click here for Death Certificate). On 29 August 1893 in Marshall County, he married BARBARA ELLEN YOHO.⁷⁸ (Click here to view Marriage License).
NICHOLAS M. PARSONS: ² Born 18 September 1870 in West Virginia ¹¹ and died in 1945.¹⁰ He married RHODA AMENTA ALLEN ¹¹ and they had two children.
PHILO L. PARSONS: ² Born 7 February 1873 in Wetzel County ¹¹ and died 5 September 1954. He married VIRGINIA BELLE GODDARD ¹¹ and they had four children.¹⁰
WILFORD WINFIELD PARSONS: ² Born 13 February 1876 in Wetzel County ¹¹ and died 19 April 1943 in Marshall County.¹⁰ He married ROSA BELL GODDARD and they had a total of eight children, at least one of which died in infancy.¹⁰

Mary Ellen died 13 August 1883 in Wetzel County. ² Oliver died 27 August 1883.¹ Their Death Certificates were not recorded (it was not required by law in Wetzel until 1917)¹³ so we don't know what killed them; however, $70.35 in medical bills were claimed against Oliver's Estate (roughly $1400 today). 03. ARMINTA HUGGANS (JOHN RANDOLPH¹) was born in about 1857 in Wetzel County,¹⁴ and died in August 1901¹⁵ in (probably Wetzel County). Unfortunately, the location of her grave is unknown.

Her first name was spelled in several other ways - Armina, Ermina, Erminta and her surname was also spelled Huggins.

All of the children except for Francis showed their occupation as "farm laborer". Josephus, Gawen, Francis and Cyrus attended school although Francis could not write.

In 1883 or 1884 (depending upon the document), Arminta gave birth to a natural son (CALVIN LEWIS HUGGANS) by Samuel Allen O'Neil,¹⁶ who was the son of SAMUEL C. O'NEIL and REBECCA BLAKE. Samuel A. was born in November 1855 in Marshall County and died 15 March 1932 in Proctor.¹⁷ He was buried at Palmer Cemetery in Wetzel County. ¹⁷

The Charles Huggins book, Huggins Families of Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia, (published 1987 by Gateway Press, Inc. of Baltimore), showed Calvin Lewis "Huggins" as being the son of "Thomas J. Huggins & Arminta Conley Huggins." (Chapter 14 page 382) . The book also showed Thomas J. Huggins as being a son of John Randolph Huggans. This is not true. "Thomas J. Huggins" was actually Thomas HIGGINS and he was unrelated to the Huggins family. (Clara Higgins was listed as informant on her brother Charles H. Higgins's Death Certificate - Clara's signature was clearly shown as HIGGINS). J. Smith, who lives in West Virginia, searched in the Wetzel County Courthouse and found a hand-written complaint dated 26 February 1884 filed by Arminta Huggans which alleged Samuel Allen O'Neil was the father of her naturally born son, Calvin. Click Here for document

Samuel O'Neil was arrested and bail set at $1. He was found guilty and ordered to pay $50 for five years to the Court.

About one month after the complaint was filed, Samuel O'Neil married EMMA WEST on 30 March 1884.¹⁸ (Click here for Marriage License). Emma was born in 1862 in Wetzel County and died in 1940 ¹⁹ in Woodlands, Wetzel County. (Click here for Obituary.) She was the daughter of ISAAC WEST (1830-1851) & LUCINDA JOHNSON (born September 1832 in Ohio).

On 22 September 1888, Arminta Huggans married WILLIAM HENRY at her father's house in Wetzel County.²⁰ Click here for their Marriage License.

William Henry was born in June 1849 in Marshall County ²¹ and died there in 1912.¹⁹ His grave is at Palmer Cemetery in Wetzel County.²² (Click here to view Headstone). William was the son of JONAS HENRY & DORCAS WHITE and was a farmer who (per the 1870, 1880 & 1910 censuses) could not read or write. (The 1900 census showed him as being unable to write only).

William had been married previously, on 18 April 1872 in Franklin District, Marshall County to EMILY YOHO.^21,78 (Click here to view Marriage License). Emily was born 1855 in Marshall County and died before September 1880, the daughter of LEWIS YOHO & DRUSILLA GARNER. Henry and Emily had two children, ELIJAH HENRY (9 December 1874-25 October 1896; Click here for Death Certificate)²³ and LOUISA HENRY (1 April 1874 - 28 December 1954; Click here for Death Certificate). ^3,24 LOUISA married George Dunham (10 September 1877 Wetzel County - 1966)^{25,
26} on 31 March 1907²⁵ and they had two children, Rhonda and Osburn.²⁷

In February 1902, William Henry filed a petition as guardian for Calvin Huggans Sr., John Wiley Henry and Anne Leona Henry for approval of gas and oil drilling on land Arminta had bequeathed to her children. Click here for petition.

On 23 November 1902, William Henry married his third wife, BARBARA JANE HUGGINS.²⁵ Barbara, who was born on 14 April 1838 and died on 3 May 1922 in Wetzel County,³ was the daughter of Barbara Yoho and George "Goen" Huggins (who, in turn, was the brother of John Randolph Huggans). She had been previously married (on 29 October 1865) to HENRY KUHNS (born 1832 Noble County, Ohio - before 1902) ²⁸(Click here for her Death Certificate).

Sanford married CASSIE EMILY RICHMOND ⁷ on 25 December 1890 in Marshall County.⁷⁸ (Click here to view Marriage License). The daughter of ABRAHAM RICHMOND and MARGARET GARNER, she was born on 28 March 1861 in Meighen, Fish Creek, Marshall County and died on 02 July 1927 in Marshall County.³⁰ (Click here to view her Death Certificate).

On 1 June 1895, Sanford, Cassie and her sister Rachel Richmond Siburt were traveling to the Wetzel County courthouse to attend the trial of Sanford's cousin, Harrison Huggins (and sons William, George and Henry). Their horse bucked and ran away, spilling the wagon.³² Rachel suffered numerous cuts and Cassie's leg was broken. (Click here to view article).

"Santford" was a farmer in Proctor . His wife had had a child who was no longer living. (This would be Earl Huggins, born in about 1892 who died as an infant). A ward, Mollie Hall, was living with them. She was nine years old and born in West Virginia. (Her father was born in Ohio and mother in West Virginia). Mollie attended school for 4.5 months during the year.

On 22 July 1901, Sanford sold his future portion of the property on Garner Run he would inherit as one of seven heirs of their father, John Randolph Huggans to his brothers Cyrus Parsons and Francis Marion Huggins. On 02 July 1927, Cassie Emily Richmond Huggans died due to diabetes³ and was buried at Mt. Rose Cemetery in Moundsville.³⁰.

On 18 June 1929, Sanford died due to a Cerebral Hemorrhage in his home at 1203 Fourth Street in Moundsville.³ (Click here to view obituary) He was buried on 21 June 1929 at Mt. Rose Cemetery in Moundsville.³⁰

Josephus (age 44) was a boarder in the household of James Leonard Parsons and his family in Proctor (District 103). James Parsons was the son of Mary Ellen Garner Parsons Huggans by her first husband, Henry Seth Parsons; James was the step-son of Mary Ellen's second husband, Oliver T. Huggans, who was Josephus's brother. The household was two families away from another brother, Cyrus Parsons Huggins. Josephus was a farm laborer and had been unemployed one month during the census term.

Josephus "Huggings" (age 45; he was only 1 year older than the last census) lived in Proctor District 159 with the family of Enoch Evans (age 67). Enoch's children were Clarence (18), Benjamin (16), Bessie (13), Jessie (9) and Hazel (5) plus step daughter Minnie McHenry (22) and her own daughter, Ola McHenry (2). Under Josephus' occupation was "Own Income".

06. GAWEN EDDY HUGGINS (JOHN RANDOLPH¹) was born 16 March 1864 in Wetzel County⁴⁰ and died 27

His first name was spelled several ways - Goine, Going, Gansen, Gowen, Gowen and Gariche and his surname Huggins, Huggans and Heggins.

1870 census (taken on 16 July):⁶

"Goine Heggins" (age 6) lived on a farm in Proctor with parents John (57) & Anna (41) and siblings Oliver (age 16), Arminta (14), Sanford (12), Josephus (8) and Francis (1). All children (except for Gawen and Francis) attended school; Arminta could not write. Real Property was valued at $2,000; Personal Property at $600. ($31,800 & $9,500 in 2006 U.S. dollars).

"G. E. Huggins" married DELORA VIRGINIA HILL on 24 December 1891 at her parents' home in New Martinsville.^{41,
42} She was the daughter of JAMES HILL and CATHERINE RITZ, born in June 1874 in Wetzel County.⁴¹ Delora died before the 1920 census.

"Gariche E. Huggins" (age 36) was a carpenter living in Proctor and had been unemployed one month during the year. He lived in a rented home with wife "Dalia V." (age 25) and children John (born January 1894), Lewis (October 1895) and Dallas (June 1898). Delora had given birth to 4 children with 3 still living. John could not read or write.

On 19 October 1901, Gawen purchased a 50x116 town lot in New Martinsville from John Stender.

On 14 March 1903, Gawen was paid $700 by brother Francis Marion for Gawen's interest in three tracts of land he inherited from their father, John Randolph Huggans. Click here to view the Deed.

On 12 May 1903, Gawen was paid $450 by Frederick Benjamin Bokelman for the 50x116 town lot in New Martinsville. Click here to view the Deed.

According to the 19 December 1903 Commissioner's Report of Fiduciary Settlement of his father's (John Randolph Huggans) Estate, there was an expenditure of $3.00 to "F. M. Huggins & Bros." for Merchandise. Gawen's brother, Francis Marion Huggins, was also listed as a carpenter in the 1900 census. (The other Huggins brothers were farmers.)

1910 census (taken between 19-20 April): ⁵¹

"Going Huggins" (age 46) and wife "Virginia" (35) were living in a rented home in Proctor with their children John (16 years), Dallas (11), Mamie (7), Earl (4) and Sadie (1 year). He was a house carpenter. "Virginia" had given birth to 9 children with 5 still living.

"Garvin" (age 55) was a widower living at his 47 year old brother Cyrus P. Huggins's farm with Cyrus' wife, Louella Mae (37) and their children Aubra (15 years), Marvin (14), Emery (12), Lindsay (10), Nola (8), Allie (6), Paul (4) and Harold (9 months). Gawen was a house carpenter.

Children of GAWEN HUGGINS and DELORA HILL:

i. THEODORE ALBERT HUGGINS was born on 05 January 1893 in Proctor District and died there on 05 January 1893.⁴¹ He was buried at Antioch Cemetery, Wetzel County.⁴¹

ii. JOHN F. HUGGINS was born on 22 January 1894 in Proctor District and died in 1948 in Wetzel County.⁴¹He was buried at West View Cemetery in Wetzel County.⁴¹ Per the 1920 census, he was a Sergeant in the US Army.⁴³ Per the 1930 census, he was a building carpenter.⁴⁴

iii. LEWIS W. HUGGINS was born on 21 October 1895 in Proctor District and died from pneumonia⁴¹ on 02 March 1904 in New Martinsville.⁷⁹

iv. DALLAS EARL HUGGINS was born 2 June 1898 in Wetzel County^46,78 and died in April 1971.⁴⁶ He married (1) MAUD MARTHA HILL 2 September 1919 in Moundsville. (Click here to view Marriage License). She was born in about 1904 in Wetzel County.⁴¹

The 1920 census shows Dallas and Maud living in a rented home on Big Grave Creek in the Clay District, Marshall County. He was employed as a laborer in a gas plant. Their neighbors were the families of Thomas Majors, William Logston, Tyler Taylor, Benjamin Hopkins, Helen Hill, John Morris, Levi Muldrew, William Dardinger, Harry Clark and Carl Dietz.

In 1954, Dallas married (2) MARTHA SMITH.⁶⁵ The daughter of PAUL F. SMITH & GRACE ____, she was born in Tyler County.

v. CARL E. HUGGINS was born on 01 September 1899 in Wetzel County and died there due to typhoid on 02 May 1907.⁴¹

vi. MAMIE DELORA HUGGINS was born on 20 July 1902 in New Martinsville⁴¹ and died in 02 August 1978 at Lutheran Medical Center Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.⁵⁷

On 20 June 1931, Mamie married LEWIS ENCIL RICHMOND (Click here to view their Marriage License). Per the Social Security Death Index, he was born on 19 April 1909 (possibly in Lynn Camp, Marshall County) and died on 19 February 1982. His last benefit was sent to Moundsville. Lewis was the son of ELIJAH RICHMOND & VIOLA GORBY . (Click here to view his obituary).

The marriage ended in divorce and the Social Security Death Index showed Mamie's surname as Huggins.

vii. EARL EMERSON HUGGINS was born on 10 September 1905 in New Martinsville and died on 10 August 1964 in Proctor District. He was buried at Northview Cemetery in New Martinsville. (Click here for Obituary.)

When he was in his early teens, Earl's mother died. By the time of the 1920 Census, Gawen had farmed out the children and was living in the household of his younger brother, Cyrus Parsons Huggins.

The 1920 census⁴⁹ showed the 14 year old Earl "Huggans" as living on "cousin's" (actually 2nd cousin) Albert Russell Goddard's (age 29) rented farm in Proctor District 149. Others in the household were Albert's wife, Anne Leona Henry Goddard (age 29; Earl's niece) and Albert's 1st cousin, 6 year old Okey Woodrow Goddard who was Earl's 1st cousin 1x removed. (Confused yet?)

I recently spoke with the daughter of Okey Woodrow Goddard and was told that Earl was never formally adopted by Albert and Anne. The same was true with Okey Woodrow Goddard and another boy, Donald Hassig. (The History of Wetzel County WV to 1983 book showed Albert and Anne raised "many" children).

On 25 July 1924, Earl married GRACE DELORIS MILLER. (Click here to view Marriage license/Minister's return). The daughter of ULYSSIS MILLER & STELLA GEORGE, she was born 09 August 1908 in Doddridge County and died 26 July 1964 in New Martinsville.⁴⁸ She was buried at Greenlawn Cemetery near New Martinsville. ⁴¹

In the 1930 census⁵⁰, Earl (age 24) lived in Proctor District 18 with Grace (age 21) and their children Ruth (age 3) & William (age 1). Also living there was married "relative" Alva Huggins (age 22).

Neighbors included the families of Joseph Pyles, Michael E. Pyles, John & Adeline Nice, James Parsons, Dudley Powell, John L. West, Friend West, Robert Roth, Belinda Burton, William Mittendorf, uncle-in-law Josephus C. Huggins, Blair Pyles, Russell E. Portell.

In all, Earl & Grace had at least two sons and two daughters:

RUTH HUGGINS was born 1927 and may have died before July 1964.

DALLAS EARL HUGGINS was born 16 November 1968 in New Martinsville

WILLIAM A. HUGGINS was born 15 December 1929 in West Virginia and died 01 October 2002 (possibly in Faytte County, West Virginia). ⁴⁶

JEANNETTE DELORA HUGGINS who was born 29 March 1935 in Proctor District⁴¹ and died 14 December 2007 (possibly in Sistersville, Tyler County).⁴⁶

VAUGHN HUGGINS aka SADIE was born on 15 August 1908 in Wetzel County and died on 28 November 1997 in Medina County, Ohio.⁴⁶ She married JAMES SENIOR MULDREW on 28 April 1927 in Moundsville.⁷⁸ (Click here to view their Marriage License). He was born on 8 December 1907 in West Virginia and died in September 1977 in Medina County, Ohio.⁴⁶

07. FRANCIS MARION HUGGINS (JOHN RANDOLPH¹) was born on 26 January 1869 in Proctor District and died on 16 September 1949 in Waverly Pike Hospital, Williamstown.^{3, 53} (Click here for Death Certificate).

On 11 November 1893, Francis married ANNA MARGARET HUFFMAN ⁵⁴ in Wetzel County. (Click here to view Marriage license/Minister's return). She was the daughter of JOHN HUFFMAN and NANCY VANDINE, born on 18 October 1873 in Belmont County, Ohio³ and died on 16 April 1948 in Waverly Pike, Williamstown.⁵⁵ (Click here for her Death Certificate).

1900 census (taken on 11 June):³⁶

Francis (age 31), his wife "Annie J." (age 26) & their children Austie M. (age 6), Okey (3), Neva (2) and Roy (3 years 1 month) were living with Francis' brother Cyrus (age 28) at Cyrus' rented farm in the Proctor District. Also living there were his father, John Randolph Huggans (age 86), nephew Wiley Webster Huggans (17) and cousin Calvin L. Huggans (17). Francis was employed as a house carpenter and had been unemployed for one month during the census year. {Per the 19 December 1903 Commissioner's Report of Fiduciary Settlement of his father's Estate, there was an expenditure of $3 to "F.M. Huggins & Bros." for Merchandise. Gawen's brother, Francis, was also listed as a carpenter in the 1900 census.}

Anna had given birth to 4 children; all living. Calvin was a farm laborer who had been unemployed for 6 months and attended school for 2 months. Wiley attended school for 4 months.

Anna died on 16 April 1948 in Waverly Pike, Williamstown due to Chronic Myocarditis and diabetes.³ She was buried on 19 April 1948 at the Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Williamstown.³ Her gravestone shows her year of birth as 1874.¹⁹

Francis died on 16 September 1949 from a coronary occlusion due to arterialschlerosis.⁶⁵ He was buried on 18 September 1949 at the Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Williamstown.⁶⁶

Children of FRANCIS HUGGINS and ANNA HUFFMAN:

i. AUSTA MAE HUGGINS ⁵⁶ aka AUSTIA MAE HUGGINS was born on 28 August 1894 in (Proctor District) Wetzel County and died 20 July 1952 at St. Joseph Hospital, Parkersburg, Wood County due to Cushing Syndrome.⁵⁸She was buried on 23 July 1952 at the Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Williamstown.⁵⁸ (Click here to view her death certificate and here to view obituary).

During the 1900 census, Austia and her parents lived at her uncle Cyrus Huggins's rented farm in Proctor District 103, Wetzel County.

During the 1910 census, Austia lived with her parents on their farm.

On 28 July 1917, Austia married ARTHUR JOSEPH HILLFERDING at the St. Xavier Catholic Church in Parkersburg, Wood County.⁵⁵ (Click here to view Marriage License/Minister's Return). The son of GEORGE HILLFERDING and MAGDALINE M. BURKHART, he was born 03 April 1891 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio⁵⁵ and died 13 March 1978 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio ⁵⁷ Arthur was of medium height with a stout build, light blue eyes and light brown hair.

During the 1920 census⁸², Arthur and Austia lived on their farm (no mortgage) in Belpre, Washington County, Ohio. Arthur was a farmer. Neighbors included Arthur's parents.

During the 1930 census⁸³, Arthur and Austa lived in their home valued at $2,280 in Belpre, Washington County, Ohio with
border Earnest Hiley (21). Arthur was a farmer and Earnest an odd jobs laborer. Neither had served in the military.

On 27 April 1942²⁶, Arthur completed a WWII Draft Application. He was a self-employed farmer at Belpre RFD1, Washington
County, Ohio. Contact name was wife, Austa.

By July 1952, Austia and Arthur lived on R. F .D. #1, Belpre, Washington County, Ohio.⁵⁸

17. ii. OKEY EARL HUGGINS was born on 12 June 1896 in Proctor and died on 14 December 1960 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio.

v. ROY HUGGINS⁵⁶ was born in April 1900 in Proctor District ³⁶ and died before the 1910 Census.

vi. CARRIE HUGGINS was born on 18 June 1902 in Proctor District and died on 18 April 1968 in Wood County, West Virginia.⁵⁵ She was buried at Riverview Cemetery in Wood County.⁵⁹ (Click here to view Obituary). She never married.⁵⁵ Per the 1930 census, she was employed as a stenographer.⁶⁰

vii. ROBERT ROY HUGGINS was born on 11 April 1904 in Proctor District and died on 06 November 1969 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio.⁵⁵ He was buried at Riverview Cemetery in Williamstown.⁶¹ (Click here to view Obituary). He never married.⁵⁵ Per the 1930 census, he was a farmer.⁵⁵

viii. BEATRICE HUGGINS was born on 12 January 1907 in Williamstown⁶⁵ and died on 25 January 1944 at the Camden Clark Hospital in Parkersburg, Wood County.⁶² She was buried at Riverview Cemetery in Williamstown.⁶² (Click here to view Obituary). Per the 1930 census, she was employed as a Registered Nurse and Floor Supervisor at the Camden Clark Hospital in Parkersburg, Wood County.⁶⁰ She did not marry.⁶²

ix. ETHEL MATILDA HUGGINS was born 13 October 1909 in Williamstown, Wood Countyand died 23 May 1991 at Selby General Hospital, Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. She was a school teacher for many years.

As of the 1930 census, he was a farmer at his parents' farm.⁶⁰ Sherman served in the U.S. Navy.⁶²

On 02 May 1936⁸¹, Sherman married KATHERINE J. COEN ⁶² who was born in 1913 and died in 2001.¹⁹ She was buried with Sherman at Riverview Cemetery in Williamstown.

Sherman and Katherine had at least one child - a daughter, Florence, who married CHARLES BARTH. ⁸¹

xi. WILLARD K. HUGGINS⁵⁷ was born on 01 January 1914 in Williamstown⁶² and died on 20 September 1985 at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta, Washington County, Ohio.¹⁹He was buried at Antioch Cemetery in Wetzel County.¹⁹ (Click here to view Obituary). On 11 April 1941, Willard enlisted in the military and served in Panama.^62,84 Willard never married.

xii. __ HUGGINS was born on 06 January 1915 in Williamstown.⁶² He/she was not listed on the 1920 census so probably died at birth or shortly thereafter.

08. CYRUS PARSONS HUGGINS (JOHN RANDOLPH¹)⁶⁷ was born in Proctor on 16 January 1872 and died there on 12 March 1942.⁴ He was buried at Antioch Cemetery in Proctor.⁴ (Click here for obituary and here to view Gravestone).

On 06 March 1903, Cyrus married LUELLA MAE GODDARD at her mother's home in Wetzel County. (Click here to view Marriage license/Minister's return and here to view their photo). The daughter of DAVID GODDARD and ELIZABETH BONAR, she was born on 14 February 1882 in Wetzel County⁶⁸ and died there at 10:30 pm on 09 May 1962 due to a Coronary thrombosis.³ (Attending Physician was Dr. B.M. Hornbrook in New Martinsville.) Luella was buried on 12 May 1962 with her husband at Antioch Cemetery in Proctor District.³ (Click here for her picture and here for Death Certificate).

Cyrus (age 8) lived on a farm in Proctor District 104 with parents John (age 65) & Anna (age 50) and siblings "Armina" (age 24), Sanford (22), "Jocephus" (age 17), Gawen (age 16) and Francis (age 11).

        ** Stephen Montgomery was the 2nd husband of Barbara Yoho who was the 1st wife of John Randolph Huggans's brother, George "Goen" Huggins.

1900 census (taken on 11 June):³⁶

Cyrus (age 28) lived on his rented farm in Proctor District. Also living there were his 86 year old father, John Randolph Huggans, brother Francis (age 31, with 26 year old wife Anna and children 6 year old Austie, 3 year Okey, 2 year Neva & 3 months old Roy) and 17 year old nephews Wiley Webster Huggans and Calvin L. Huggans. Cyrus was a farmer, John Randolph Huggans was retired, Francis was employed as a house carpenter (who had been unemployed for one month during the census year) and Calvin was a farm laborer (who had been unemployed for 6 months). Anna had given birth to 4 children; all living. Calvin attended school for 2 months and Wiley for 4 months.

*** Samuel A. O'Neil was the father Wiley's cousin, Calvin L. Huggans.

On 22 July 1901, Cyrus and brother Francis Marion Huggins purchased their brother Sanford's future portion of the property on Garner Run he would inherit as one of seven heirs of their father, John Randolph Huggans. Sanford was paid $200 down and would be paid an additional $1400. John Randolph also signed the contract, which allowed him a Life Estate on the property. Click here to view the Deed.

On 30 September 1901, Cyrus paid $750 to brother Gawen for his future portion of the property "on the waters of Garner Run in Proctor District..." as one of seven heirs of their father, John Randolph Huggans (who retained a Life Estate). Click here to view Deed.

On 24 December 1903, Cyrus purchased land in Wetzel County from his brothers Francis Marion & Josephus Huggins and cousin Wiley Webster Huggans they had inherited from John Randolph Huggans. The deal excluded Gas & Oil rights. Cyrus paid $750 to Francis, $300 to Josephus and $150 to Wiley. Click here to view the Deed.

On 30 May 1904, Cyrus paid $100 for approximately 7.25 acres of land "on the waters of Garner Run a branch of Proctor creek" from brother, Francis Marion Huggins. Click here to view Deed.

Cyrus filed an action in Chancery Court over a portion of the Land in Wetzel his father (John Randolph Huggans) had bequeathed to Arminta Huggans Henry's children, John W. and Anne Leona Henry. In April 1905, the Commissioner's Report divided their portions as follows: Cyrus with 114 64/160 acres, John W. Henry with 6 64/100 acres and Anne Leona Henry with 5 � acres. On 22 February 1906, Cyrus and Louella were paid $1,843.05 for Coal Rights to J. Littleton Dawson for part of their property in the Proctor District. Click here to view the Deed.

On 20 July 1907, Cyrus paid $60 to nephew Calvin L. Huggans Sr. & wife Mary for Gas & Oil Rights on their share of 3 tracts of land in Proctor District Calvin had inherited from grandfather John Randolph Huggans. Click here to view the Deed.

On 8 November 1907, Cyrus bought Gas & Oil rights for four years on 16 acres near Proctor Creek owned by A. J. Truex and wife Roberta. Click here to view the Deed.

Cyrus (age 37) was living on his farm with no mortgage in the Proctor District, with his wife, Louella (27) and their children Aubra (5 years), Marvin (4), Emery L. (2) and Lindsay (8 months). Louella had given birth to 4 children, all living.

Included the families of Robert Smith (58), Jacob Moore (56), William Henry* (58), James Hill (32), Jenus Bennett (35), Richard Rorke (70), Wilford Garner (53), Sylvanus Henthorn (47) and Beau Hafer (49). Cyrus's brother, 45 year old Josephus "Huggings", was also living nearby as a boarder in the household of Enoch J. Evans.

* William Henry was Cyrus's former brother in-law.

On 9 September 1912, Cyrus paid his cousin Wiley W. Huggans and wife Emma $100 for their share of Gas & Oil rights in three tracts of land in Wetzel County that Wiley had inherited from his grandfather, John Randolph Huggans. Click here to view the Deed.

Cyrus (age 47) lived on his farm with no mortgage in Proctor District 150 with wife Louella (37) and children Aubra (15), Marvin (14), Emory (12), Lindsay (10), Nola (8), Allie (aka Alice, 6), Paul (4) and Harold (9 months). Also living there was Cyrus's 55 year old widowed brother Gawen Huggins {shown as Garvin}, who was a house carpenter. All of the children except Paul and Harold attended school.

"Haggins" (age 58) lived on his farm valued at $1,800 (no mortgage) in Proctor with wife Louella (age 48) and children Marvin (24 years), Emery (22), Linzy (19), Nola (18), Alice (16), Paul (15), Harold (11), John (8) and Joseph (6). Emery and Lindsay worked as farm laborers, with Emery being unemployed for 2 months and Lindsay for 3 months during the census year.

18. i. AUBRA GENEVIEVE HUGGINS was born on 11 May 1904 in Proctor District and died on 28 October 1981 in New Martinsville. ³

ii. MARVIN LAWRENCE HUGGINS⁶² was born on 23 November 1906 in Proctor (1908 per his marriage certificate) and died from Typhoid on 04 October 1932 at Wetzel County Hospital in New Martinsville.³ He was buried on 06 October 1932 at Antioch Cemetery in Proctor.³(Click here for Death Certificate). Marvin lived with his parents during the 1910, 1920 & 1930 censuses.

On 06 July 1932, Marvin married MILDRED IRENE BLAKEin New Martinsville. (Click here to view Marriage license/Minister's return). The daughter of FRIEND LLOYD BLAKE & IDA CATHERINE HERMAN, Mildred was born on 11 June 1912 in Wetzel County⁷² and died at 5:30 am on 26 March 1935 in New Martinsvilledue to puerperal eclampsia.³ She was buried on 29 March 1935 at Antioch Cemetery in Proctor.³ (Click here for Death Certificate).

19. iii. EMERY LEE HUGGINS was born on 07 September 1907 in Proctor District and died 16 March 1999 at the Wetzel County Hospital in New Martinsville

20. iv. LINDSAY MARSHALL HUGGINS was born on 07 August 1909 in Proctor District and died on 23 October 1984 in New Martinsville.

v. NOLA ELEANOR HUGGINS was born on 22 March 1911 in Proctor District ⁷³ and died in May 1981 (possibly in Wetzel County).⁴⁶

At the time of the 1920 & 1930 censuses, she lived with her parents.

On 08 July 1933, Nola married JAMES ARVEL KELLEY in New Martinsville ⁷³ with Allen S. Fields officiating. The son of EUGENE FRANKLIN KELLEY and RHODA CATHERINE FURBEE, he was born in 1909 in Bebee, Wetzel County⁷³ and died March 1977.⁴⁶

James and Nola had at least two children - Delbert Lee Kelley who was born 09 September 1937 in Wetzel County and died 22 March 1979 at Wetzel County Hospital and William D. vi. ALICE MAE HUGGINS aka ALLIE HUGGINS was born on 19 June 1914 in the Proctor District⁷³ and died in November 1990.⁴⁶ During the 1920 & 1930 censuses, she lived with her parents.

She married VINCENT JOSEPH HOHMAN on 26 June 1946 in Proctor with Rev. Robert Weiskircher officiating.⁷³ He was born on 21 April 1914 in Newdale, Wetzel County⁷³and died January 1981.⁴⁶ (Click here to view photo of Alice).

21. vii. PAUL EDWIN HUGGINS was born on 11 November 1916 in the Proctor District and died 21 November 1982.

viii. HERBERT HUGGINS was born on 11 December 1917 in the Proctor District and died there on 15 December 1917.⁷⁶ He was buried at Antioch Cemetery in Proctor District. (Click here to view Gravestone).

ix. HAROLD RHUBEN HUGGINS was born on 06 March 1919 in the Proctor District and died on 04 August 1969 in Wetzel County.⁷⁶ He was buried in Wetzel County. (Click here to view Gravestone).

At the time of the 1920 & 1930 census, he lived with his parents.

He served in the military during WWII and the Korean Conflict¹⁹.

Harold married and later divorced. ⁷⁶

22. x. JOHN ESTHER HUGGINS was born on 25 June 1921 in the Proctor District and died on 18 March 1998 in Grove City, Franklin County, Ohio.

xi. JOSEPH DALE HUGGINS was born on 28 November 1923 in the Proctor District²⁸ and died at his home⁴⁶ on 01 June 1994 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.⁷⁷ At the time of the 1930 census, he lived with his parents.⁶⁹

He served in the Army during WWII, having enlisted on 23 March 1943 in Ohio (Fort Hayes, Columbus County) as a Private. His civilian occupation was as an automobile serviceman and he was single with dependents.²⁶
