ORVILLE and MILDRED VIRGINIA MYERS 17,22 aka MIDGE were married on 12 November 1932 at the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Moundsville with Joseph C. Hoffman officiating.25,64  Mildred was born 12 July 1913 in Moundsville. 1,17 (Click  here  for marriage license).  Mildred was the natural daughter of GEORGE W. MYERS and HAZEL ALMETA NICE.  Her birth certificate is not on file.  (Hazel, in turn, was the daughter of Joseph A. Nice and Alice Jane Shoup).

MILDRED died 27 March 1987 in Glen Dale, Marshall County13,17  from Bone cancer.26  Grisell's Funeral Services (at 400 Jefferson Avenue in Moundsville) handled the funeral.  Mildred was buried before 31 March next to her husband in the Wood Hill United Methodist Cemetery on Rt. 250, near Moundsville.26  (Click here for her Death Certificate and here for her obituary).

Mildred's mother, Hazel Almeta Nice, had been married (since 22 February 1912)64 to OKEY O. McKNIGHT when she became pregnant by George W. Myers with Mildred.  (Click here for marriage license).   Okey was born on 24 February 1888 in Pleasants County, West Virginia28,29 and was the son of THOMAS C. McKNIGHT & LIVIA J. STEWART.  Okey was a farm laborer during the 1900 census (age 12) and a section foreman for the B&O Railroad in Wood County, during the 1910 census (age 22).  On his Draft Registration card (completed on 5 June 1917 ), he wrote that he had been "sick since on 15 January 1917".  He served in the Ohio National Guard between 1 October 1917 - 21 April 1918.27   His WW II Draft Card lists as contact a "Mrs. Audrey McKnight" at the same address as his own so it's quite possible he remarried after Hazel's death in 1918. (Click here and here for Hazel's obituaries).

Mildred's father, George W. Myers Sr., was born 2 March 1892 in Big Tree, Aleppo, Greene County, Pennsylvania 7 and  died 13 October 1966 in Moundsville.21  Click here for his obituary.  He was buried at Riverview Cemetery (VA Section) in Moundsville.  His parents were Andrew Myers Jr. & Emmaline Jane Duncan.  George married Nellie Myrtle Clutter on 22 November 1922 in Moundsville30,64 and they had five children.  (Click here to view marriage license).

During the time of the 1930 census, Jefferson District 74 was almost entirely made up of coal miners.  Many of the residents had parents who were born in Eastern Europe.  I spoke with two of Mildred's daughters and they didn't know why their mother was living with her uncle in Pennsylvania instead of with her father in West Virginia.  However, her Uncle and Aunt had five children under the age of eight years so that may be a clue.  According to the census, Mildred wasn't attending school and had no occupation so she was almost assuredly helping out with the children. In addition, her father had married NELLIE MYRTLE CLUTTER (born 11 November 1903; died after November 1987) in 1922 and they had their own children by 1930  - perhaps Mildred was more welcome elsewhere.

It's unknown how Orville and Mildred met but their families lived within a few miles of each other in Moundsville during the 1930 census.

In 1937, they were living at #2 Maple Avenue in Moundsville and Orville was working at the Mark Toy Factory in Glen Dale, Marshall County. (Click here for Orville's Social Security Application).   He was still living in Moundsville at the end of December 1947 per his mother's obituary.  By the 1950s, he was working on the State Road project, eventually retiring from there.22

Orville and Mildred had seven children over a 20 year period.  The first three were born within five years of each other (1933-1938) and the next three within another five year period (1943-1948).  Five years later, their last child was born so there were basically 3 generations of children. 22

During the late 1950s, Orville and his family lived in a very poor section of Moundsville called Parrs Run in a home with 4 rooms (living room, kitchen and two bedrooms) with no inside plumbing.   Orville and Mildred slept in one bedroom and the children in the other, using blankets on a rope to divide the room.22  I was told these were old abandoned coal miner shacks.  Even though the family was poor, the children always attended school in clean clothing. Attending school was difficult at times for the older children because some of the other students mocked them for their poverty.22

While Mildred (by all accounts) was a kind and gentle woman, Orville was a very strict man.  His eldest son, John Huggins said, "Dad was a  very mean man.  He'd beat you as likely as look at you."  His daughter, Patricia Huggins, agreed.  Daughter Janice Lee Huggins severed ties completely with the family due to his treatment of her.  Another daughter, Judy, also cut herself off from the family.

Orville's elder children (three daughters and eldest son) were disciplined, sometimes severely - usually from a strap on the wall near the front door.  However, the younger children saw a much milder man. Linda Huggins, the youngest daughter, said her father was good to her and she didn't see evidence of strict discipline by him.   She also pointed out her elder siblings weren't exactly angels themselves - Hilda & Janice would sneak out at night and were often caught by Orville upon their return.

Orville's father, Wiley Webster Huggans, had been an abusive person - his granddaughter Patricia Huggins said of Wiley, "Grandpap was a mean man. A very mean man. He was mean to everyone around him."  Patricia's brother, John, said of him, "Grandpap was plain downright mean."  Wiley was only eleven months old when both of his parents died and he was raised by his elderly grandfather, John Randolph Huggans.  At least two uncles and their families also lived in the same household at times. We don't know what made Wiley "mean"; it's quite possible he raised his son Orville with "strict discipline" and Orville perpetuated the cycle - or at least until he was older and his youngest children were born.

Another factor in the difference in Orville's conduct may have been due to a severe beating he sustained in about 1954-1956.   He was jumped by two men and left for dead with severe head injuries.  While he eventually recovered, "he was never the same". 22  One of the men was caught but not prosecuted and the other was later killed.22

The day after Orville's funeral, Mildred went to Ohio to visit her daughter, Judy Huggins.  That night, Mildred's house burned to the ground.  The fire was suspected as arson but no one was arrested. 22

After Orville's death, Mildred moved into housing for elderly.22    In 1987, she was diagnosed with cancer.  Coincidentally, her brother-in-law, Curtis Huggins, was also diagnosed with the same disease.  Curtis and Mildred were in the same hospital at the same time and died within a few weeks of each other.  Neither knew the other was nearby.  Their relatives would visit one then the other just down the hall. 22
