HISTORY OF PALESTINE CHURCH

On August 31, 1823, Alexander Campbell started preaching at Wellsburg, VA
in a Church of Christ.  

palestine church      In 1873 Palestine Church was started by preaching of
Harrison Yoho in a house about 202 yards east of the present building,
which is about 1/3 mile above Briggs Hill on Proctor Creek.  The house was
dedicated August 30, 1874 by R. K. Walton of Clarington, Ohio.
 

palestine church elders     First officers were Marion Moore and Washington Garner, Elders;  Joseph
Cox and M.W. Fair, Deacons.  Some others who served were J.R. Huggins, F.
Hall, Elizah Hendershot, J.M. Garret, David Burton, A.J.Briggs, George
Burton, Hayes Hall, T.A. Judge, Holley Willoughby, all as Elders.  As
Deacons were G.W. Cecil, Jason Hendershot, Robert Workman, John V. Palmer,
Asa Truex, Enoch Truex, and T. Harman.  J.M. Garret, Robert Workman, Holley
Willoughby and Hayes Hall served well over thirty years.
 

palestine church elders Close-up     Although Palestine never supported a full time minister, some who
preached were:  A.A. Bunner, Adam Sibert, Samuel Albright, Jacob Hendershot,
F.F. Fonner, Charles Miller, M.M. Devore, Olan Mozena, Harry Proctor (member
of British Parliament), Herbert Smith, Moody Edwards, Charles Hulme, Robert
Hueston, Enoh Smith, Guy Mayfield, Alan Fields, Harry Brister, Finley Oaks,
Chester Dunn, A. Linkletter, J.V. Coombs, J.C. Waddell, Hiram Van Vooris,
Dale Brock, Jones, Carter, Evans, Earl Freeman, Paul Dailey, Riggs, Kendle,
Haynes, Reynalds, Tom Martin, Paul Mangnson, E. DeVore and W. Sliter.
 

Palestine held services from 1873 until 1979 with usually 20-50 people
in attendance.  There is an Annual Homecoming the 4th Sunday in August.
